Walking round Arundel town centre at the weekend, I stumbled upon a new shop that has recently opened. It's the new Christmas shop in Tarrant Square, Tarrant Street and is a wonderful addition to the town. From the moment you walk through the door the smell of Christmas hits you with all the wonderful candles on display. There are lots of fantastic snowglobes and lots of wonderful unique baubles. I like getting an Advent candle every year to burn and there were some really good ones on display. I bought one with the Nativity on it and will look forward to lighting it in December.

There are also fleece blankets with snowmen on them and ornaments and advent calendars, soft toys and handmade Christmas cards.  There are also musical novelties and a Carousel that went round and around playing Christmas music. Simon Birks the Proprietor is very friendly and helpful and he loves Christmas. He told me that he opened in August and intends to stay and be open all year round. The website can be found HERE with links to his eBay store and a facebook fan page.

Hi there, I'm Simon, the owner of the shop. I've just found this site, and wanted to clear up the concerns about being a charity shop. When we opened in August, we supported the Chestnut Tree House appeal. We held fund raising events in store, and still collect for the charity today. It's never been advertised as a charity shop, it's just a normal business, like any other. And of course you don't have to come into the shop, the choice is yours!

I think that you need to be really careful about making decisions on the basis of gossip and the 'buzz around town'. Do you know for definite that the owners are claiming to be a charitable business but are in fact not, or is this just a rumour? Where did you get your info from?

The buzz around town is that the proprietor of this establishment has been told to take down the charity banner (was it Chestnut Tree Hospice??) that was emblazoned outside the shop on opening. Have spent money in there, but now feel l've been conned. ln reality, it's a private business for the benefit of the proprietor.

l was told it was a charity shop, but now l have heard that it might be a fully fledged private business, and only a very tiny percentage of the takings actually go to charity at all. Don't know for sure but it sounds really scammy if its true.

I'm going to avoid it now.

Quite! It's kinda depressing that it seems to all start so early - you're worn out by the time it actually arrives! Don't get me wrong, I love Christmas, I just don't like having it rammed down my throat while my suntan is still vaguely present.
