People in Arundel who look after someone who is ill, frail or disabled are being offered support by the Council's Wellbeing Team.

They are working with two local Carers Support Services to run free drop-in information sessions for carers in Littlehampton and Bognor Regis.

The first session, staffed by Arun's Wellbeing Advisors, and the two Carers Support Services which cover Worthing, Bognor Regis, Chichester and surrounding areas, will take place on February 22nd at Littlehampton Civic Centre from 2pm to 4pm.

Sessions will then continue to run in Littlehampton on the 4th Wednesday of each month. They will take place in Bognor Regis Town Hall on the 2nd Monday of each month between 10am and 3pm.

A wide range of information will be available from how to request and prepare for a Carers Assessment, to finding alternative care arrangements. Staff have links with health and social care professionals who may be able to provide equipment and adaptations to help people remain independent at home. Signposting to benefit and money advisors will also be on offer.

Arun's Cabinet Member for Housing and Community Care Councillor Roger Elkins said: "The responsibility of looking after someone else means many carers often miss out on things the rest of us take for granted. This could be something as everyday as going out for the evening or getting a full night's sleep. These drop-ins are extremely important in helping carers can access the advice and support they need."

It is estimated that around 74,000 people in West Sussex are looking after a family member, friend or neighbour who could not manage without their help. Those who do not identify themselves as 'carers' but perhaps help an elderly relative out with shopping, or support a friend after an accident or time in hospital, are also being encouraged to see what support is available to them.

To find out more about the Carers Support Drop-Ins, or for information if you are unable to make it to a session, contact Vicki Reynolds in Arun's Wellbeing Team on 01903 737934 or Ian Stuart from Carers Support Service Worthing & District on 01903 528604.
