It’s finally time to start thinking about getting the little horrors back to school - but it might also be time for you to learn something new too.

So with a couple of weeks left before the new terms start here is the definitive guide to schools and nurseries in and around Arundel. And there are also a couple of options if you’d like to head back into the classroom too.

How about learning something new yourself?

Arundel’s rolling countryside is so beautiful so how about learning to ride a horse and experience the hills from a different perspective. Check out the Arundel Farm Riding School or the L A School of Motoring if you fancy learning something new.

Primary schools

Arundel C of E Primary School  - a school in the town for four-11-year-olds. Its Ofsted inspection earlier this year rated it as ‘good’. Inspectors cited the pupils’ behaviour as ‘exemplary’ and went on to say: “The highly competent headteacher, with the active support of all staff, is embedding high ambitions. The consequence of this is the development of pupils' very good ability to think for themselves, which helps to prepare them well for their future lives.”

Amberley C of E First School - is a Church of England school for four- 10-year-olds in the nearby village of Amberley. The most recent Ofsted report gave it a ‘satisfactory’ rating and said that it was smaller than average primary schools.

If you would like to see the school’s own website then have a look here.

Yapton C of E Primary School - this was described by Ofsted as a ‘good and improving school’.

It was given a good rating overall and the inspector said: “Staff and governors have high aspirations for pupils and are increasingly meeting the school's aim to provide a high quality education whilst promoting Christian values. Parents are positive about the school and give it strong support.”

The school’s website is currently under construction.

St Philip’s Catholic Primary School - this Catholic school was given an overall ‘good’ rating by Ofsted.

Inspectors went on to say: “It has some outstanding features, principal among which are the leadership of the headteacher, welfare in the Early Years Foundation Stage, pupils' personal development and well-being and the school's pastoral care. 'What has always been paramount is the care and attention given to the children,' wrote one parent and this sums up the views of the majority.”

Slindon C of E Prmiary School - Only a few pupils on the roll at this tiny village school. The overall Ofsted rating is ‘satisfactory’. Inspectors said: “The headteacher provides effective leadership and has created a strong, caring ethos enabling pupils to become confident, happy learners. Parents are pleased with what the school provides. As one parent said, 'We like the way the school makes the children feel good about themselves and instills confidence.”

Walberton and Binsted C of E Primary School - Rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted - you can’t get much better than this. Inspectors said: “This is an outstanding school. It provides an excellent education for pupils and prepares them very effectively for the next stage of their education. Achievement is outstanding and pupils in Year 6 are on course to exceed the very challenging targets set for them in the 2009 national tests. Underpinning this excellent progress is high quality teaching linked to a curriculum which meets the needs of all pupils very effectively.”

It goes on to say: “This is a school which always puts the needs of pupils first.”

Secondary schools

The Littlehampton Academy - this is a secondary school and sixth form college.

The Angmering School - This caters for 11-18-year-olds. It is a larger than average secondary school and it also has a sixth form. It is located a few miles away from Arundel. It was given a ‘satisfactory’ rating by Ofsted. The inspectors went onto say: “Academic achievement is satisfactory. Attainment has risen slightly in recent years but has not kept pace with national rises and challenging academic targets have been missed. This is because the rate of students' progress has fallen back from being faster than average, when the school was last inspected, to a position in line with that seen nationally. The principle cause is that teaching, although satisfactory, is less consistent in its impact on learning. “

Talking about the sxth form the inspectors said: “Sixth form provision is good. The students are well cared for and their numbers are growing. They enjoy studying at the school and provide good role models for younger students. They make good progress and achieve well on their courses because teaching and academic guidance are more consistently effective than in the main school.”

Sixth form only

Worthing Sxith Form College - sixth form only with adult education. It’s rated as a ‘good’ college with good guidance and support for its pupils. Achievements and standards are also rated as good.

Private schools

Slindon College - This is a private boys’ boarding school set in the quaint village of Slindon. There are 100 boys aged nine-16 and it particularly caters for those that might not flourish in a big school.

The school is set in a beautiful location.
