Shoppers and tourists had to run for cover when huge downpours descended on Arundel on Saturday afternoon.

The rain lashed the town from about 3pm for several hours as residents grabbed for their umbrellas and headed into doorways to keep dry.

The bowling match which was going on had to be delayed as players dashed across the green and huddled under the clubhouse roof.

The only ones to enjoy the sudden rain were the ducks who enjoyed swimming around Swanbourne Lake on their own as everyone who was on boats quickly rowed to the side and ran to their cars.

Festival organisers in the town are hoping that the rain has now been in force and will keep away for the annual festivities which start on August 20th and run for 10 days.

The heavy rain pelted the roads nearby and made driving conditions quite hazardous. There were more visitors to nearby Goodwood for designer Wayne Heminway’s new Vintage at Goodwood festival.

Did anyone see the old lady who has a shopping trolley and on it she has a sign which says something like: “I’m slow, please overtake me.”

She was about the only person in Arundel braving the rain fearlessly on Saturday afternoon.
